You can watch all the YouTube videos you like, however there is a reason why tiling is a 3 – 4 year apprenticeship.
The rooms in your house are not all simple 1 x 1 m shapes … are they?
Note: It will cost you 2 or 3 times as much to rectify defective workmanship and / or demolish & re-install.
Taking the DIY approach is a bad idea for most people.
Still Not Convinced?
Every tile in a box of ceramic tiles may look the same, however they vary in size … ever so slightly. Walls in older properties (and new houses too) are also not flat, square or plum.
When an amateur tiler lays tiles, they accumulate errors across a wall (see diagram ‘A’). Each tile may only be 0.1 mm out of alignment, but after 30 tiles … that can add up to 3 mm!

If you want a professional job … hire an experienced tiler, because it’s a LOT harder tiling a bathroom than it looks!
Inconsistent Gaps
If you paid a qualified tiler to do your job then you should expect a professional result!
As per the Australian Standards – AS 3958.1; grout lines are defective if they are not of a consistent width as far as practicable.
Common Practices:
- 2 – 3 mm gap between wall tiles
- 3 – 5 mm gap for floor tiles
